When you need a job doing around the house, it’s important to find a tradesperson that you can trust. This will save you time, money and frustration. 

  • Ask family and friends for personal recommendations.
  • Use the TrustMark tool to find tradespeople near you.
  • Contact your local Age UK. Ask about their ‘Trusted Trader’ scheme

Be wary of traders who knock on your front door unexpectedly looking to get work – don’t feel pressured to hire them. If in doubt, always say no and close the door and, if necessary, contact the police.

Before you hire a tradesperson

  • Get at least 3 quotes and compare prices
  • Check credentials and trade licences
  • Ask for references and speak to previous customers
  • Find out how long they’ve been in business
  • Get contact details – including an address and landline phone number

Avoid having problems with tradespeople

  • Give them a very clear brief
  • Get a written contract
  • Don’t make any advance payments
  • Check building regulations

What to do if you want to make a complaint about the quality of a job?

You can report poor quality work or service from a tradesperson or company with Trading Standards.

Discuss your problem with Citizens Advice first – they’ll pass your report to Trading Standards. They’ll use the information you provide to decide whether they need to investigate. Trading Standards may then contact you if they need more information.

We’ve pre-vetted the contractors to ensure that they meet our recommended status, but the relationship is yours to manage. Do tell us how its going so that
we can review which contractors we recommend if needed. If you know any gardeners that would like to be added to our list, please ask them to contact us
and quote “Recommended Gardener List”.
